Create a new study
To create eye-level views of a development or point of interest, select Camera / View Cameras to reveal the following menu:
Clicking on Show Studies will load previous studies created using this tool, and Create Project will start a new study.
Click Create Project, and the menu will expand revealing the following additional fields:
Click on Create Project to get started, and enter a project name in the title field. You may also enter an optional description.
Once you have named your project, click Select Building to highlight the building you want your views to focus on. The building you click will be shaded red for easy identification:
Once you have selected your building, select Add A Camera then click a location on the map where you’d like to place a camera:
Red arrows will appear where you place your cameras, and they will point towards your chosen building. As you add cameras, you’ll notice thumbnails of views from those cameras appear on the right hand side of the View Cameras menu:
Click directly on any of these thumbnails to open that view, and click on the thumbnail a second time to close it:
When you open a view, the View Cameras menu expands to reveal the grid coordinates of your camera (GBOS in the UK, ITM in Belfast), as well as adjustable sliders for changing the bearing, pitch, and camera lens size:
While a view is loaded, you can also walk around using the A/S/D/W keys, and look around using the arrow keys to get the positioning and angle just right:
A small white tick box appears at the bottom of each thumbnail – you can use them to select which views you want to export before clicking Batch Screengrab. The Batch Screengrab feature gives you the option to export your images in 2K, 4K, or 8K. Exported images will appear in your documents folder here – C:\Users\[YourUserName]\Documents\VU.CITY\View Cameras\[YourProjectName]
NOTE: Old screenshots will be overwritten if you export the same view more than once. If you wish to generate different versions of the same view, you will need to move screenshots you have exported out of your project’s data folder before clicking Batch Screengrab again.
View Cameras are fixed at 1.65 metres from the ground. This means the AOD height of the camera as displayed in the View Cameras menu will be the height of the ground from sea level plus 1.65 metres.
Clicking the Export button will convert your views into a reader-friendly CSV file that you can forward to others. This CSV file details the eastings and northings coordinate of each camera, plus the AOD, pitch, bearing, and focal length.
Note these CSV files are intended for sharing key information about your view cameras in a format that is easy for others to read only. They are not in a format that can be loaded back into VU.CITY. If you wish to send someone your view cameras in a format they can import into VU.CITY, please use the Save Project feature instead.
Saving your studies
View Camera studies cannot be saved on their own, rather they need to be saved as part of a VU.CITY Project. In order to save your views, first click Reset All in the View Camera menu to close your view, then click Developments / Save Project.

To close your view cameras and return to the VU.CITY model, click Reset All.
Previously created View Camera studies can be loaded by clicking the Show Studies button. If you created your study in a previous session, you will need to load your project file first.
Using specific coordinates
If you have specific coordinates and angles you need to reproduce in VU.CITY, instead of trying to manually recreate the photos using the View Camera tool, please instead enter the coordinates and camera settings into this online converter. It will generate a VU.CITY Project that you can load into VU.CITY.
