Before You Import

Before importing a model into VU.CITY, you will need to know the following:

– Which 3D modelling app was used to create the model;
– What scale was used (VU.CITY supports mmcmmin, and ft);
– The geolocation coordinates and AOD (in metres).

If you are a planning officer, it is recommended you review this article to help develop a workflow that will make importing models easier.

If you are a developer, it is recommended you review this article to help develop a workflow that will make preparing a model for inclusion in a planning application easier.

Importing Your Model

To import a model into VU.CITY, choose Developments / Import to reveal the following buttons:

The Cloud icon will import a model you have stored to VU.CITY Drive. The Plus icon will allow you to import a file stored locally on your computer. The Trashcan is for removing models you have imported during your current session.

To get started, click the Plus icon to reveal the following options:

On the left you have options for Projection, and on the right you have Import Options. The Projection settings dictate where the model will appear. If your FBX model has already been geolocated, there is no need to add any projection settings. If, however, your model is not geolocated, choose New Origin, then manually enter your geolocation coordinates in the provided field in metres:

You can also click Set Origin to automatically populate the Eastings/Northings/AOD fields with the coordinates of wherever you click in the VU.CITY model.

Next, set the File Origin (i.e. which modelling/CAD/BIM package was used to create the model), as well as the Scale. Selecting the incorrect file origin can result in flipped models, and the incorrect scale will produce a model that is too small or too big.

Lastly, click Import, and a file explorer will appear allowing you to search the files stored on your computer.

Locate your model

After importing a model, the following icons will appear next to the filename:

Location Pin – click it to pan to the location where your model has imported to;
4-way Arrow – click it to reveal options for adjusting the model’s position / orientation;
Eye – click it to show / hide your model;
Cloud Upload – upload the model to your VU.CITY Drive;
Tick Box – indicates which model is selected (you can load several at a time).

Click on the location pin, and the camera will pan to the location of your model. Note if the model is not geolocated, and you do not enter a new origin, the model will appear in the middle of an empty grid. This location is 0,0 of the grid coordinate system (OS in the UK, ITM in Ireland):

If your model ends up in the middle of an empty grid, the recommended steps are to delete it, enter your intended geolocation coordinates into the New Origin field (as described above), then re-import it.

Legacy geolocation offsets

You no longer need to calculate offsets in the latest release of VU.CITY when manually geolocating a model. Instead, use your actual geolocation coordinates as described above.

If you do not know your coordinates, but you still have your legacy VU.CITY offsets, use this un-calculator to work out your original coordinates.
